In some operating systems, such as DOS, OS/2, and NetWare, the backslash character separates directory names or directory and file names in a path statement. By itself, the backslash represents the root directory in these operating systems. In various programming and editing contexts, the backslash is used to escape the character that follows. For example, is an escape code to indicate a newline character in many operating environments.
